Ultra-processed food (UPF) has moved from a niche nutrition-science term to mainstream shorthand for "food to avoid" — but the underlying cohort evidence keeps accumulating, and a 2026 pair of studies adds both confirmation and useful nuance to the picture.
The core mortality signal, replicated again
A 2026 population-based cohort study found that higher UPF consumption was associated with higher all-cause and cause-specific mortality — one of several large 2026 cohorts (alongside work in cancer survivors and UK Biobank participants) independently reaching a similar conclusion using different populations and, in some cases, different measurement approaches, including blood-based metabolite indices of UPF intake rather than self-report alone.
The nuance: UPF content and diet quality are related, but not identical
