The 10-hour eating window: what time-restricted eating actually changes
Time-restricted eating has been oversold as a weight-loss hack and, in reaction, dismissed as meaningless once bigger trials didn’t show a magic effect. The honest middle ground is more interesting than either extreme — and it’s the version Misi actually tracks.

Both the hype and the backlash miss the more specific, better-supported claim.
What the landmark study actually found
Sutton and colleagues’ 2018 study in Cell Metabolism is the citation Misi’s habit library uses, and it is worth being precise about what it showed: in men with prediabetes, an early time-restricted eating window (roughly 6am–3pm) improved insulin sensitivity, blood pressure and oxidative stress markers — independent of weight loss, because the trial deliberately held body weight stable to isolate the timing effect. That is a genuinely interesting result: the WHEN of eating moved metabolic markers even when the WHAT and HOW MUCH didn’t change.
The honest claim for time-restricted eating is not "eat less, lose more." It is "eating in daylight hours may improve insulin sensitivity independent of what you eat" — a narrower, still-useful claim.
Where the bigger trials pushed back
Larger, longer studies on free-living populations — not the tightly controlled metabolic-ward conditions of the original trial — have generally found that TRE’s weight-loss effect, when it appears at all, is modest and largely explained by people simply eating less because their window is shorter, not by any independent metabolic magic. If you don’t naturally eat less inside a 10-hour window, TRE alone is unlikely to move the scale much.
Why Misi still tracks it, with a specific target
Given that mixed picture, Misi’s habit library sets a deliberately modest target — an eating window of 10 hours or less, not the more aggressive 8-hour protocols used in some marketing — and frames it as supporting circadian alignment and insulin sensitivity rather than as a standalone weight-loss lever. The practical version
If you already tend to eat within a 10–12 hour window most days, formalising it costs little and may offer a modest metabolic benefit. If your current pattern spans 14–16 hours — a late-night snack habit is the usual culprit — tightening it is a reasonable low-effort experiment, evaluated honestly: track your fasting glucose and how you feel, rather than expecting it to substitute for the other, better-evidenced levers like protein, fibre and resistance training.
