Why most "FODMAP-friendly" meal plans fail an ingredient audit
We audited hundreds of meals labelled "FODMAP-friendly" at the individual-ingredient level. A large share contained hidden high-FODMAP triggers — onion, garlic, honey, inulin. Here is why labels fail, and what a real check looks like.

When we audited meal plans marketed as gut-friendly at the level of individual ingredients — the only level that actually matters for FODMAPs — a striking proportion contained hidden high-FODMAP triggers. The label was reassuring; the ingredient list was not. Here is why that happens, and what a genuine check involves.
FODMAP compliance is decided at the ingredient level
A meal is only as low-FODMAP as its worst ingredient. A grilled chicken salad sounds impeccably gut-safe — until the dressing contains garlic, the croutons are wheat, and there is a scatter of red onion on top. Each of those is a well-known high-FODMAP trigger, and any one of them can undo the whole meal. FODMAP status is not a property of a dish’s general vibe; it is the sum of what is actually in it, in the amounts served.
The usual hidden culprits
The same offenders show up again and again in supposedly friendly plans. Onion and garlic are the worst, because they are ubiquitous — in stocks, sauces, spice blends, marinades and "seasoning" that never gets itemised. Wheat-based thickeners and breadcrumbs sneak in. Honey and high-fructose sweeteners appear in dressings and glazes. And inulin or chicory root fibre — added to boost the fibre content of "healthy" products — is a potent FODMAP hiding in plain sight on the label. None of these are exotic; they are just rarely audited.

Why the labels fail
Three things break most "FODMAP-friendly" labelling. First, it is often applied to a recipe as a whole by eye, without checking each component against a database like Monash. Second, portion matters — a food can be low-FODMAP at a small serving and high at a large one, and labels almost never specify the threshold. Third, composite ingredients (a stock cube, a spice mix, a sauce) hide multiple sub-ingredients that never get itemised. A label is a claim; an ingredient audit is a verification, and the two frequently disagree.
What a real check looks like
Genuine FODMAP validation means decomposing every meal to its individual ingredients, checking each against known FODMAP data, and accounting for the portion actually served — not trusting a headline label. It is tedious to do by hand for even one meal, let alone a week’s plan, which is precisely why so few plans actually do it and why so many "friendly" meals quietly fail.
