A three-decade cohort study puts a number on something trainers have argued about for years: how much strength training is actually enough for a longevity benefit — and the answer is a lot less than most gym routines assume.

Cardio has owned the longevity conversation for decades, largely because VO2max has such a strong, well-replicated relationship with all-cause mortality. Strength training’s dose-response relationship with lifespan has been murkier — fewer long cohorts, shorter follow-up. A 2026 analysis following roughly 147,000 adults across three decades adds some of the clearest long-run data yet.
The dose that mattered
The headline finding: somewhere in the range of 90 to 120 minutes of strength training per week was associated with the lowest mortality risk over the follow-up period — a dose that is genuinely achievable (two to three 40–60 minute sessions) rather than the daily-lifting regime a dedicated bodybuilder might run. Critically, the curve did not keep improving indefinitely with more volume; the benefit showed diminishing and, in some analyses of similar cohorts, even reversing returns well beyond this range, which lines up with a "consistent and moderate" message rather than "more is always better."
Why a 30-year cohort changes the conversation
Most exercise-and-mortality research follows people for 5 to 10 years, which is enough to catch a signal but not always enough to separate people who happened to be sick (and therefore not exercising) at baseline from people whose training genuinely changed their trajectory. Three decades of follow-up gives this kind of reverse-causation problem much less room to explain away the result — people were tracked long enough that a huge range of health events, and shifts in their training habits, played out across the data.
Ninety to a hundred and twenty minutes a week — roughly two to three sessions — was the range associated with the lowest long-run mortality risk. This is a case where the effective dose is smaller than most people assume.
What this means for programming
This does not argue against training harder or more often if that is your goal — physique, performance and strength standards have their own dose-response curves, and this is a mortality analysis, not a hypertrophy one. But it is a useful reality check for anyone who has skipped strength training because "I don’t have time for a real programme": two structured full-body sessions a week clears the bar this study associates with the biggest longevity return.
