The gene variant behind families who seem to age more slowly

Exceptional longevity tends to cluster in families more than lifestyle alone would predict, which has long pointed researchers toward a genetic contribution on top of diet, activity and luck. A 2026 study of families with multiple members reaching very old age in good health identifies a specific, relatively rare variant that shows up disproportionately often in these lineages.
Inflammation as the common thread
The variant’s apparent mechanism runs through chronic, low-grade inflammation — the same slow-burning inflammatory process (sometimes called "inflammaging") implicated in cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, frailty and most other major age-related conditions. Family members carrying the variant showed markers consistent with a dampened inflammatory response over the course of aging, compared with population norms.
Why a rare variant still matters for everyone else
Most people reading this will not carry this specific variant, and a single gene is very unlikely to be the whole story even within these families. The value of this kind of research is less "here is a gene therapy target" and more "here is more evidence that inflammation is a, if not the, central lever in the biological-aging process" — which matters because inflammation, unlike most genetics, is substantially modifiable through sleep, training, diet composition and body fat.
