Falls are one of the largest preventable drivers of disability and loss of independence in older adults, and "just stay active" is not specific enough advice to actually reduce them. A 2026 network meta-analysis pooling multiple exercise trial types set out to answer a more precise, actionable question: which exercise type, and how much of it, most reliably lowers fall risk?

Why a network meta-analysis is the right tool here

A network meta-analysis lets researchers compare many different intervention types — balance training, resistance training, multicomponent programs, Tai Chi and others — against each other indirectly, even when few trials compared every pair head-to-head, and rank them by effectiveness. That ranking is exactly what someone programming exercise for fall prevention needs, rather than a single trial testing one method in isolation.

The type-and-dose question

The analysis is explicit about identifying not just which exercise category worked best, but the dose (frequency, duration, program length) associated with the largest risk reduction — addressing a real gap in most fall-prevention guidance, which tends to recommend exercise generically without specifying how much is enough to matter clinically.
